The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) recently bid a heartfelt farewell to two exceptional members of its Board, Professor Crain Soudien and Ms Meg Pahad, whose decades of service have left an indelible mark on the organisation and the broader education landscape.

Having joined the IEB Board in 2000, Professor Soudien served in various roles, including as Chairperson of the Board, the role he occupied until he retired at the end of February 2026. He served with distinction, offering visionary leadership grounded in integrity, inclusivity, and a deep commitment to education as a force for social good. Ms Pahad, who joined the Board in 2002, played a pivotal role not only within the IEB but also as Chairperson of its subsidiary, IEB Assessment Education and Training (Pty) Ltd (ASSET). Her enduring passion for Adult Education and her unwavering advocacy for the transformative power of assessment have significantly shaped both policy and practice.

The farewell gathering was filled with moving tributes that spoke to the character, dedication, and humanity of both leaders:

Colleagues reflected on Professor Soudien’s ability to bridge divides and inspire a shared vision in a complex and often polarised educational landscape. His passion for governance and his insistence on socially responsible assessment have left a lasting legacy, captured not only in institutional practice but also in the thought leadership reflected in IEB’s annual reports.

Ms Pahad was celebrated as a steadfast champion of education, particularly in the field of adult learning. Her work has consistently emphasised the role of assessment as a catalyst for meaningful change in education systems. She has been described as an education activist at heart, someone who not only envisioned transformation but actively worked towards it, mentoring others and influencing generations of educators and leaders along the way.

A recurring theme throughout the tributes was the selflessness with which both Professor Soudien and Ms Pahad served. Their long-standing commitment to the IEB, often in a voluntary capacity, stands as a testament to their belief in the organisation’s mission and their dedication to advancing education in South Africa.

With Gratitude and Appreciation

The IEB extends its deepest gratitude to Professor Crain Soudien and Ms Meg Pahad for their extraordinary service, wisdom, and leadership over many years. Their contributions have helped shape the organisation into what it is today and will continue to guide its path forward.

As we celebrate their legacy, we do so with both appreciation and a sense of responsibility - to carry forward the values they have embodied and the vision they have so passionately advanced.

We wish them both every success and fulfilment in the next chapter of their journeys.
