The 2026 IEB–TechWays National AI Hackathon showed over 100 schools across Southern Africa expressing interest in engaging with one of the most defining technologies of our time. This initiative reflects a fundamental shift in education: learners are moving beyond using technology to applying it with purpose.

Across age groups, learner teams from Grades 6 – 12 translated conceptual understanding into practical AI-enabled solutions addressing real-world challenges such as fraud prevention, transport safety, food security, and support for informal economies.

What stood out was not only technical proficiency, but the depth of thinking demonstrated:

• Critical thinking grounded in context

• Creativity directed towards societal need

• Communication and collaboration in team-based problem-solving

• Agency in addressing complex, real-world challenges

Learners are no longer positioned as passive participants in a digital world, but as active contributors shaping innovation.

Congratulations to all participating learners, educators and partners who continue to advance the important work of building not only technical proficiency, but the foundations of thoughtful, responsible innovation.
