Over 930 learners from 68 schools across South Africa—including five public schools—are rising to the challenge in the 2025 IEB–TechWays AI Hackathon. Now in its second year, the Hackathon is gaining momentum offering Grade 6–12 learners a dynamic platform to develop innovative AI solutions to real-world problems.

Organised by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) in collaboration with education technology company TechWays, the event spotlights pressing societal challenges - such as urbanisation, water shortages, youth unemployment, and education access— challenging learners to explore AI application beyond traditional boundaries.

'South Africa’s most pressing challenges need bold, tech-driven thinking,' says Confidence Dikgole, CEO of the IEB. 'This Hackathon empowers learners to see themselves as agents of innovation, using data and AI to imagine solutions that can truly transform lives.'

The 2025 IEB-TechWays Hackathon has drawn participation from 215 Intermediate and Senior phase learners, alongside 725 in high school. The growing engagement with the Hackathon reflects a strong commitment to fostering AI literacy across all learning levels.  Notably, the inclusion of public schools this year marks a meaningful step toward greater accessibility and inclusivity.

'We’re blown away by the quality of thinking these learners are demonstrating,' says Joanne Brink, CEO of TechWays. 'They’re not just using AI—they’re reimagining what’s possible with it.'

Showcasing innovation on a national stage, teams will present their ideas through 10-slide pitches, Python-coded prototypes, and brief demo videos. Entries will be assessed on originality, feasibility, social impact, and technical creativity. Winners will be announced at the National AI Awards Ceremony on 28 May 2025, marking another key milestone in the evolution of AI education in South Africa.

With the Hackathon more than doubling its reach since 2024, the IEB–TechWays partnership continues to champion ethical innovation and empower young minds with the skills to navigate and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
