Non-Official Languages in the National Curriculum Statement Grades 10-12 (General)

pdf Procedure for dealing with Non official languages
pdf Update on NOL

On 17 June 2004 the Minister of Education approved 13 non-official languages to be listed in the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Grades 10 - 12 (General).

The IEB sent the marking guidelines for all the Grade11 Non Official Languages Examination Papers to the national Department of Education. On receipt of the marking guidelines the national department sent these to the provincial education departments for distribution to state schools. The IEB has received a number of queries from teachers in state schools who have not received the necessary marking guidelines. The IEB has therefore decided to post the marking guidelines on its website.

Teachers should be aware that these marking guidelines are working documents. The IEB will not enter into any discussions or correspondence about any marking memorandum. It is acknowledged that there may be different views about some matters of emphasis or detail of a marking memorandum. It is also recognised that, without the benefit of attendance at a standardisation meeting, there may be different interpretations of the application of a marking memorandum.

Schools writing with the Department of Education, should please refer to the list of contact persons for the non-official languages in provincial departments.

The 13 non-official languages are listed at the following levels in the NCS in Grade 10 from 2006:
